I don’t really want to drag a piece of plastic into the age of information technology, and therefore I decided to see what we have replaced imports there. From the list of alternatives, I chose Mir Pay as it works with cards of all issuing banks where this card is issued. And this is where my adventure started.
It all starts with the issuance of a MIR card in any selected bank. Usually this does not entail any significant labor and time costs, and in the case of a virtual card, it is done literally in 5 seconds. Next, I download the Mir Pay application for Android and start following the steps carefully indicated in it.
It’s okay. And so it is clear that in the wake of the hype, the servers simply do not have time to cope with the flow of requests and fall under the influx of users. On the third day of waiting and completely memorizing all the attributes of the card (after all, it is virtual, you can’t just scan it), my patience finally snapped, and I contacted Mir Pay technical support. It’s funny that the division of the Chinese industry in their caller ID decided that I was calling the Adler recreation center – what do they, the Chinese, understand about our banking affairs. However, there is nothing new in Adler: “Failures, a large flow of requests, arm yourself with patience and please wait.” Well. I’m not in a big hurry, just wait.
Somewhere on the fifth “it’s about to come” SMS, suspicions begin to creep in on me: maybe the mobile network is naughty, or has the Chinese industry gone crazy? I reboot, perform a balance check request – everything comes up, which means that the network is in order. And still no SMS. Well, what can I do, I’m waiting. If within an hour or two SMS messages still reach, it means that they got lost somewhere along the road, it happens. Spoiler: no, they didn’t.
Periodically repeating requests throughout the day (is it worth saying that during this time I learned the card details better than the birthdays of all the next of kin?), I understand that I need to call Adler again. I mean, in support of the national payment system MIR. However, this time support says: “This is where the card was issued – go there. I mean, contact the technical support of your issuing bank, everything is fine with us. Okay, not a question. “The support service of the yellow bank responds quickly enough, now we will solve the problem,” I thought. Yeah.
For the next 5 days, I lazily fiddled with the Mir Pay application in my free minutes. Nothing has changed. Well, all patience comes to an end: I turn again to the bank’s TP. The polite girl Elena answers. Asks: do you have an android? Android, I answer. Android Pay stopped working – what does it mean?

When will Google Pay appear in Russia

The start of the launch of the Google Pay service with MIR cards is planned from October 26th. After the National Payment Card System (NSPK) submits the release of the technical solution. However, there is no need to talk about the exact dates of the introduction of the system in specific banks. They are just starting testing and they themselves cannot even designate approximate dates for the start of work.
Adding MIR cards to Google Pay is not such a simple process as it might seem at first glance. To make the transition, banks will need to tokenize cards. Simply put, they will have to create a kind of virtual copy of the plastic solution using special NSPK technology, which will include encrypted data about the card, payer, and much more.
Banks participating in the pilot program to launch MIR cards in Google Pay have become known.
Which banks will support MIR Pay
Several banks have already announced plans to integrate the MIR system. Director of Retail Products at DOM Bank. Russian Federation Evgeny Shitikov gave an interview on this occasion, where he said that the credit institution was among the first participants in the pilot group to connect the MIR system to Google Pay.

It is interesting that the well-known Sberbank is not on the lists, although there was information about this earlier. I think that Sberbank will join the movement later, however, these are just my assumptions.
Possible problems when paying by phone
Difficulties with payment arise for owners of any devices and cardholders of different banks. They do not depend on the payment system or card type, and most often occur for the following reasons:
- There is a malfunction of the NFC module on your device or POS terminal. Restart your phone and try the operation again.
- Too short contact between card and payment terminal. Bring the phone up again and hold it a little longer.
- Operation limit. This may apply to debit and credit cards, for which there are daily limits on debits – for example, for a child’s card, you can set a payment limit of no more than 10,000 rubles per month or another.
- Failures in the Internet, lack of communication with the bank at the receiving equipment.
- Your card has expired.
- An outdated version of the mobile device software or payment application. Perform an update.
Linking a card to a mobile phone simplifies payments, reduces the time of service at the checkout by choosing to pay through the payment service used.

How to add a card to Mir Pay and how to make a payment
The interface of the Mir Pay application is intuitive and contains step-by-step instructions for adding new cards.
To add a card, you need:
- open the application installed on your mobile device;
- scan the card with a mobile phone camera, add its data manually or scan NFC;
- accept the terms of service and pass the card binding through automatic identification of the user and application via SMS by the security system of your bank.
When adding payment data to a mobile device, it is required to activate access to the contents of the phone using a password or fingerprint – this is necessary to protect your data. To use Mir Pay for all payments using your phone, set the application as a priority.
To pay by card using your phone, unlock the device and bring it to the payment terminal: the payment will be debited from the linked Mir bank card, which is selected as the main one.
To remove a card from the payment application, select the “Detailed information about the card” section and the required action.
How safe is paying by phone
Contactless payment services do not operate with the payment data of your card. When registering in the system, a unique ID is generated – a bank card token that allows you to carry out transactions without an open transfer of details. Information about the card number, holder, term is completely closed, for additional identification, an alternative PIN code is automatically created at the checkout, which does not match the main PIN of the card.
- data exchange is carried out using NFC technology, which is characterized by a short range, excluding the inconspicuous connection of other devices;
- when using a telephone, a plastic carrier is not used, it cannot be broken, lost or fall into the hands of intruders;
- mandatory blocking of the mobile device and re-identification during payment minimizes the likelihood of other persons accessing your payment data.
How else to pay with a Mir card using a phone
The Samsung Pay application supports Mir cards of many banks in the Russian Federation. Apple Pay is temporarily unavailable.
When adding cards to payment applications, the procedure is the same as when using Mir Pay
- scan the World map with the device’s built-in camera or enter its data manually;
- accept the terms of service and verify your identity with the code from your bank’s SMS;
- the card is ready for use.
Other contactless payment methods, such as the Google Pay app, are not yet available.
Advantages of the MIR card
- MIR card transactions are controlled only by NSPK, which has a positive effect on their security.
- For any budget payments and benefits, only cards of this payment system are used, so it’s better to get at least one.
- Independence from foreign payment systems and sanctions.
- For MIR debit cards, interest is charged on the balance in some banks.
- Many online stores and services in Russia provide an additional discount when paying with such a card.
I myself actively use the MIR card and try to keep all my savings there. With her it is convenient to flaunt in public transport, that’s where I get a scholarship. Well, and, of course, when you realize that you are safe from the effects of various sanctions, it is also very nice. After all, we are already heavily dependent on Google.
It is not clear why Samsung Pay has been working with MIR for a long time, but Google Pay is still not.
