How to change the Sberbank contactless payment limit – increase, decrease
Since April 2019, the payment limit of the Visa international payment system has increased to three thousand rubles. This greatly simplifies the “quick” purchases. As for the holders of other cards, the client can independently change the contactless payment parameters. Adjustments can be made both up and down. Consider how to change the Sberbank contactless payment limit.
For what purpose are they introduced?
Currently, almost every debit and credit card issued by Sberbank uses special chips with a FRID radio antenna. Thanks to this technology, it is possible to make purchases and transfer data about them to the bank via a radio channel. There is no need to pay through the receiver every time, wasting time on entering a PIN code.
It is possible to carry out a contactless transaction only if there is a POS-terminal that is able to receive a signal. Otherwise, the bank card works as usual.
To protect the card from dishonest actions and ensure the safety of funds, Sberbank initially sets a contactless payment limit of 1,000 rubles. These measures allow you to restrict access to all account savings in cases where fraudsters intend to use your card details.
Daily limits are also set to reduce the likelihood of theft of large amounts. In particular, transactions require personal confirmation:
- for transfers to Sberbank cardholders;
- for interbank transfers;
- for purchases over the set limit.
How to set the limit?
Today, Sberbank provides access to the use of a bank card without entering a PIN code only for Visa and MasterCard payment systems.
The Bank uses two contactless payment technologies – PayWave and PayPass, to which Visa and Mastercard are linked, respectively.
There are two ways for Sberbank customers to set a limit on a contactless card:
When contacting the bank in person, you must have a mobile phone with a SIM card to which a credit or debit card is linked. The operation will need to be confirmed with a code that will come to your number.
In the future, you will be able to make purchases without entering a password, subject to the limit amount. Confirmation of operations in the support service may be required if:
- there is a zero daily limit for financial expenses;
- the current rate for the day has been exhausted (it will be possible to make a payment on your own from 0:00 from the moment the transaction is completed).
If desired, the client can change the previously set limits.
Making adjustments
To make adjustments to the contactless payment limit with a Sberbank bank card, users just need to change the settings in their personal account:
- go to the “Limits and Orders” category;
- click on the previously set limit and enter the required size;
- confirm the operation through the contact center (works around the clock).
Contactless payment limits can only be amended with the prior consent of the financial institution. Otherwise, the service will display an error message.
You can always change the limits in the bank itself by approaching the employees with a corresponding request.
It is recommended to set limits based on your own consumption. With small limits, adjustments will often have to be made, with large ones, the risk of illegal write-off of a large amount increases.
Sberbank is loyal to customers: if you wish, you can adjust limits once a day, but only when you contact a branch or a hotline.
How to reduce the limit?
The use of contactless payment in Russia currently does not inspire absolute confidence, despite the popularity of this feature. If the bank card accidentally ends up in the wrong hands, all the benefits of making purchases without a password will become available to an unknown person.
You can reduce worries about the possibility of such a situation by reducing the limit on contactless payments for Sberbank customers:
- log in to your personal account of the Sberbank Online system;
- in the same way go to “Spending Limits”;
- on the right are your current parameters – click on them;
- set the amount that does not exceed a thousand rubles.
Contactless payment will simplify daily trips to the store, the limits, in turn, will protect the funds on the bank card.
If you have lost your card or noticed the use of its details without your consent, you should not take measures to change the limits. It is best to block and reissue the card.
Contactless payments have quietly become a part of our lives due to the simplicity and convenience of their use. Even if you accidentally forget the set PIN code on your bank card, you can always pay for the purchase. New technologies allow transactions to be carried out without a card at all – through smartphones with built-in NFC chips.
So that the advantages of this option do not turn into disadvantages for the holder, it is enough to set limits for the day and a one-time payment, thus protecting your own funds from the actions of scammers.
Mastercard and Visa shamelessly increased the limit of transactions without entering a pin code!
The other day I noticed that when shopping in stores for more than 1000 rubles, the amount began to be withdrawn without entering a pin code (previously this worked only for purchases up to 1000 rubles).
Wrote to Alfa-Bank technical support:
FIVE THOUSAND Carl!
Damn, that’s almost a third of the salary of a Russian, belonging to the middle class!)
It turns out that now another person can easily make purchases for these amounts with a lost/stolen card! And you can’t change this setting!
Possible duplicates found
I use nfc from my phone. No problem
We are all very happy for you
Good afternoon! Colleagues said everything correctly, the payment system changed the amount of purchases without entering a pin code. Visa – up to 3 thousand rubles, Mastercard – up to 5. At the same time, the amounts depend on the settings of the terminal where you make the payment. If the card is lost/stolen, then it must be immediately blocked in the application. In it, you can also make a limit on the amount, over which transactions will not take place. You can also set the 3ds mode in our chat or on the hotline. It will reject payments that do not require SMS confirmation.
please GO TO MEET THE CLIENTS
just enter in the mobile application and personal account version MANUAL regulation of limits (!) Let the clients manage it themselves
#comment_170538520 – the link to the article says that it was a recommendation of payment systems, and the banks make the final decision, right? If so, why did Alfa-Bank decide to increase the limits? After all, 5 thousand (and even 3) is a rather tangible amount for the Russians.
Sberbank. At the current time in all places where I use the card, the limit without a pin code is 1000 rubles. Visa. Even your alpha is on the way
Since you are not far from here, then tell me why, when paying with a Mir card, contactless terminals ask for a pin from 1000, and if through NFC, then I had purchases under 2000 without entering a pin?
I don’t know how in other banks, in VTB, when paying by phone, you can write an application at the bank (in fact, just ask) to expand the limits or remove them altogether to the payment threshold without a pin code. So maybe you just removed the restrictions.
Ps By the way, at VTB, when paying with a contactless card, it still requires a pin code for amounts above 1k.
a couple of days ago several times I went to the same five with MS – 700 rubles without a pin 1200 with a pin
By the way, yes. I bought cigarettes this weekend – I didn’t ask for a pin. I bought it in a food store for 2000 with a ponytail – I asked for a pin. Visa card.
Likewise. I paid more than a thousand yesterday, and it was from Alfa, please, pozhalte pin code.
How can it be from alpha, you’re confusing something. Mastercard or Visa?
2 hours ago in commerce (Crossroads): Score one thousand with big kopecks but not two, alpha contactless card, processing – savings (on a typewriter logo of the Savings Bank) – enter the pin code.
Hmm. Aggregators warned about this two years ago.
I agree with the author of the post. Everyone chooses what is convenient for him. It’s more convenient for me and my parents to enter a pin code than to waste time, nerves, health, and money later on to restore the card if it (God forbid) is lost. But such a situation has already happened, and the money (about 1,000 rubles) has gone from it: unknown people in other stores have paid twice.
TS, before you panic, figure it out. The concept is that the amount without a pincode is the amount for which the bank considers it possible to take risks. If you see a write-off for this amount, make a call to the bank, inform that this operation was not performed by you and ask: 1. Cancel the transaction – because the money does not leave the card immediately, they are blocked until the end of the settlement day. The bank in this case, it turns out, will pay for the operation from its own pocket.
2. Block the card – because in any case, your card has already been opened/stolen.
Yes, it will not work in 100% of cases, because we live in such a country. But this is how it should work and how to use it if the problem has overtaken. The only thing that cannot be done is to cancel the transaction through the bank, if he himself put the card to the reader without looking, and then realized that the amount was more than expected. But there is already a question of vigilance and the ability to negotiate with the store.
That is, before, with a limit of a thousand, it was impossible to make 5 purchases of a thousand?
On the lost card, cvv code, on the other hand, you can buy something on the Internet for at least 100 thousand.
Not everywhere. For example, buying games on Steam or votes on VKontache without confirmation, but replenishing a travel card with confirmation.
Shh! The dude needs to cut down the plusoff at the expense of “and such and such a firm has gone to hell in the region.” It’s trendy, people fall for it.
today in Lenta, Mastercard from Sber was calculated – a little more than 1tr. entered the PIN.
At the self-service checkout, I entered a pin code in the tape for a purchase of less than 1,000 rubles.
not half a year but earlier from 04/13/2019
I learned to put minuses much earlier
1*5000 = 5*1000. If the card is squandered, then everything will be written off without problems, so do not panic.
they wanted to introduce this to the people so that fewer people would poke their fingers at pin-pads at all cash desks.
Strange. I bought the day before yesterday, there was something a little more than a piece – so I asked for a PIN card.
Not every bank has increased the limit. And this was voiced earlier, almost half a month ago, maybe earlier, in the main news. Yes, banks, not all, some, increase the amount, this may be due to the situation with the coronovirus, to reduce contact when entering a pin code. Lost a card – block, on the contrary, it is convenient for many, not everyone can adapt to you alone.
Well, about the survey, you yourself understand the absurdity of this event, it is not realistic and extra labor costs. And regarding the introduction of restrictions personally from the client, adjust it completely for yourself, if the bank is happy to try for its clients and it would be convenient for clients, this would be a big plus for the bank.
GOD AS FUCKING! DO NOT ENTER PIN ON THIS THING IN THE STORE!
ps the average salary in the country is 37,000, so 3,000 is about 8% and 5,000 is about 14. But not a third.
pin is entered from 1000. Accordingly, for you a trifle over a thousand. Wouldn’t you go to hell?
Only after you.
Because it’s normal to collect a basket for 4000-5000 for a family for a week.
Because one time to go and take 1200-1500 is also not uncommon.
So go fuck yourself and come back after you have a family and a baby.
Even this does not make a thousand small things. Don’t change your mind.
Does. 5000×4 weeks is a budget of 20k for food, 1000 is 5%. A trifle.
Pornhub completely switches to payment in cryptocurrencies
The period of price stagnation seems to have come to an end as Pornhub is forced to completely switch to cryptocurrency for payments.
As adult entertainment giant Pornhub confirmed this week, payment providers Visa and MasterCard are no longer handling its payments, leaving only cryptocurrencies for their roughly 120 million daily visitors.
The reason, the companies say, is that questions remain about Pornhub’s handling of illegal content. For MasterCard, the block is permanent, while Visa will continue to monitor its decision.
In response, Pornhub told the Associated Press that the allegations were “irresponsible and clearly untrue.”
“This news shocks hundreds of thousands of models who rely on our platform for their livelihood,” the statement said.
Visa and MasterCard are following PayPal, avoiding the world’s largest porn site, which is now forced to rely solely on cryptocurrency payments.
Pornhub also accepts Bitcoin (BTC) and Litecoin (LTC) and allows models to cash out a small amount of other altcoins. However, a payment gateway for Pornhub employees has already been found.
In July, Sberbank will launch a cash withdrawal service at the store’s checkout for non-cash payments
“The service will roll out to SMEs in July 2019 and will also be available to third-party Visa cardholders by the time of launch. A large trading business will be able to implement such a service in September. It will be possible to receive up to 5,000 rubles in cash for one transaction, ”the bank said in a statement.
It is noted that when making a non-cash payment for a purchase at the checkout of a store, the cashier will enter the total amount, taking into account the cash withdrawal, after which the client will only confirm the operation with a PIN code.
As previously reported, the Mastercard international payment system, together with Russian banks, began testing the cash withdrawal service at the cash desks of stores through POS-terminals back in 2018. The Federal Antimonopoly Service, to which the company applied for an opinion, positively assesses the possible impact of the technology on the market.
You can withdraw cash from the card at the cash desk of a store, pharmacy or gas station, for example, in the USA. To do this, you need to make a purchase for a certain amount and ask for a cashback, so the purchase amount plus the amount of cash issued will be debited from your bank card.
Is it possible to disable contactless card payment
Dear readers, good afternoon!
Have you noticed that now almost all cards are issued with the possibility of contactless payment? Even pension MIR in Sberbank have this function.
As a bank employee, I often communicate with holders of such cards. And you know, I can’t say that users are happy. Such a function scares them rather.
Today I will talk about what to be wary of and whether it is possible to disable contactless card payment.
What cardholders should be afraid of
There is nothing wrong with contactless payment itself. It is often even convenient that the card does not need to be inserted into the terminal, but can simply be attached to it.
Users are more worried that when paying for purchases in the amount of up to 1000 rubles, a pin code is not requested. This is done for convenience – it seems like time is saved with small purchases.
But at the same time, this possibility also means that anyone can use the card even without a PIN code – after all, you can buy several purchases for up to 1,000 rubles. At the same time, this is done very quickly – each operation takes no more than 10 seconds.
Alas, it is impossible to disable the function of paying with a card for purchases up to 1000 rubles without entering a PIN code – this possibility is not provided by any payment system. There are only two ways to protect yourself: set daily limits on card spending or set a ban on card payments in stores. But these options have a significant disadvantage – then ordinary purchases will also fail.
The result is as follows: using your card, fraudsters will be able to make purchases for amounts up to 1,000 rubles, and you will not be able to prevent this. It remains only to hope for the security service of the bank, who will suspect something is wrong and promptly (or not so) block the card.
Most cardholders are unanimous in their opinion that they do not need this function – they say that it is better to enter a pin code once again than to lose even 3-4 thousand rubles. If you agree or the material was helpful, please give it a THUMB UP. Thank you!
Card users often face the question of how to change the contactless payment limit? Changing the Sberbank contactless payment limit is quite simple. The procedure is done in order to simplify purchases, other tasks related to bank card funds. The card user has the right to make adjustments, both up and down. It is worth considering how to set a limit task, why is the function convenient?
What does contactless payment mean?
Before understanding, setting a limit on contactless payments by Sberbank? You need to figure out what contactless payment is, why it exists, does it help customers?
Contactless payment is a task in which the card user has the right to use devices instead of physical media. Payment without a card is a relevant, modern function, which allows you not to carry a card in your wallet, bag, and secure your data. Using a card in a mobile device helps protect information from fraudsters. After all, a pin code, a fingerprint will reliably protect personal data from intruders who are trying to hack the card.
Do not forget to use contactless payment, you need to purchase a special mobile device that supports the function. Without support for contactless payment, the user will not be able to carry a bank card inside the device, pay for purchases in a convenient mode.
What is the purpose of the limit?
Everyone can set a limit on a Sberbank contactless card. However, not everyone knows what the function exists for. At the same time, the function for Sberbank customers is installed for some reasons that are worth considering.
Reasons to limit contactless payments:
- limitation in the amount of costs;
- rational spending of funds;
- saves you from rash purchases.
Sometimes, when the card is inside a mobile device, a person does not think about how much he spends and for what. Money is not felt in the hands and therefore it will not work to see how much is left. Contactless payment users often make rash purchases that are completely useless. Therefore, the limit from Sberbank will help get rid of problems and thoughtless financial costs.
If a person understands that it is difficult for him to control himself and save money, then it is easier to set a limit on a card in Sberbank and not worry about unnecessary expenses.
How to put a limit on a Sberbank card?
Setting a limit on a Sberbank contactless payment card is easy. You need to carry out an SMS confirmation, which comes directly from the bank. In this case, the limit is reduced or increased in the Sberbank Online application personally by the user.
First you need to go to Sberbank Online, log in to your personal profile. Then go to the “Settings” – “Limits” section. If there is a checkmark on the page, it means that the limit is set in general and the conditions of the bank. However, this does not mean that the client of the bank will not establish individual conditions. After all, the task is carried out quickly, simply.
If the user wants to set individual conditions, then a numeric value is indicated in the free field. Do not forget that the checkbox should be unchecked before entering a new amount. After the operation is completed, a message comes to the phone that the amount of the limit has changed. The client is now entitled to spend the daily rate of money, which is indicated in the field personally by the user.
There is only one thing in the limit, but that the bank sets daily cost rates, which are better to get acquainted with in advance by calling the call center.
How can I lower my contactless payment limit?
To reduce the contactless payment limit, you must also visit Sberbank Online. You can use the application on your phone or go to the official website through a browser.
The limit is reduced in the same way as it is changed for the user’s card. It should be noted that the bank has tasks to reduce limits in any systems. For example, a card user does not have the right to transfer more than 10 thousand rubles per day by a mobile operator. Reducing the limit leads to conscious costs and savings. Therefore, users often use a function that helps to save up for their goals and desires.

Reducing the limit in Sberbank Online through “Settings” is simple, and the task will take a couple of minutes. Confirmation of the operation is also sent via SMS to the client’s phone number. Therefore, the card will be protected and the data safe.
Advantages of contactless payment
Contactless payment has long been a relevant feature for Sberbank card users. The bank makes it possible not to carry a card with you, to be afraid of losing it. After all, the payment system is in a mobile device under reliable protection, which no attacker can hack.
Contactless payment is convenient not only because you do not have to carry a wallet with a card and be afraid for security. But it is also fast, convenient ATM withdrawals or transfers. Arriving at the ATM, the client needs to bring the side of the chip to the device and enter the pin code. After completing the tasks set by the user, you need to enter the pin code again and the withdrawal of funds or other operations are completed in a couple of minutes. Such payment exists for those who appreciate time, comfort in payment. Therefore, the function, popular among Sberbank users, is actively used throughout Russia.
If a person wants to save time, then he needs to purchase a device that will support contactless payment with a Sberbank card. A mobile phone must have a special chip that will allow you to perform the task. At the same time, each client of Sberbank will be able to set a limit on withdrawals, payment of funds per day in order to control costs and save. Therefore, contactless payment from Sberbank is not only comfortable for those who are constantly at work, but also a desire to save on fixed costs, save up for worthwhile, useful things.
Contactless payment is a very actively developing service at the moment. Sberbank offers a new generation of debit cards to its customers. At the same time, sometimes it is required to disable this service. How to do it?
What is contactless payment
Contactless payment is based on modern wireless technologies. Such a card is equipped with a transmitter chip, which can be recognized by special receivers in contactless payment terminals.
Thus, there is no need to insert a card into the slot and dial a PIN code to pay for a product or any service – you just need to place the card at a distance of 10 cm from the device. In addition, leading mobile phone manufacturers are developing special software that allows you to conveniently and safely link a card with contactless technology to a mobile application.
Read about it in our article: How to connect Apple Pay Sberbank
After that, you can use your own smartphone to pay, without the name of a bank card with you at all.
How to disable contactless payment of Sberbank
But this way of paying can make cost control more difficult. Therefore, some users decide to get rid of this service. How to disable the contactless payment function of Sberbank?
Unfortunately, the service cannot be disabled for special contactless payment cards.
As long as the card is valid, it will be possible to make contactless purchases with it.
Since it is impossible to disable contactless payment from a Sberbank card, all that remains for the user is to refuse the card, or disable the application on their own smartphone.
However, there is also a simple way to limit the performance of the card itself. This will reduce the risk of unauthorized purchases or third party fraud.
How to turn off contactless payment mechanically
To do this, it is necessary to ensure that the module built into the card is not remotely recognized by the contactless receiver of the terminal.
Of course, for this you should not open the card somehow – you need to remember that it is the property of the bank, and not its holder.
Just wrap the card in metal foil. The power of the transmitter module built into the contactless card is very low. Therefore, even one layer of food foil is enough to make remote card reading almost impossible.
Another working method allows you to quickly and conveniently get a card if necessary. Foil should not wrap the bank card itself, but the pocket of the wallet in which it is located. This will also ensure that the module is isolated from the remote card reader.
In addition, special cases for protecting contactless cards have recently appeared on sale. Such a cover is inexpensive, looks attractive, and provides reliable blocking of wireless access to the user’s card.
How to disable contactless payment by phone
https://youtube.com/watch?v=pj6134A7nUM%3Ffeature%3Doembed
How to disable contactless payment technology with a Sberbank card made using a mobile device? You can choose one of two methods:
- The first is to completely get rid of such an opportunity.
- The second is to temporarily block remote payment using a smartphone.
To implement the first method, you must completely remove the downloaded application. The removal process is standard for Android and IOS devices. After the removal is completed, it is necessary to clear the cache (RAM) of the phone in the corresponding section.
In order to disable the application with the ability to activate it in the future, you need to turn off the NFC transmitting module.
This feature is implemented in the standard smartphone settings.
The NFC module control item is located in the “Wireless networks” menu tab of the phone. Having found it, you need to set the slider to an inactive position, or uncheck it (depending on the phone model and operating system) so that it is not highlighted or highlighted in color.
Why can’t I turn it off
Unfortunately, the technology used in modern cards does not allow you to disable the remote chip at the request of the user or the bank. Therefore, simply coming to a bank branch with a demand to turn off contactless payment and getting the desired service will not work.
In addition, sometimes remote payment can work even after turning off the NFC module of the phone. This usually happens after rebooting the operating system due to the fact that the module is turned on automatically when network resources are loaded.
In addition, you must disable this feature on all devices with the installed banking application. What users often forget about.
Pros and cons of contactless payment
Contactless payment has a number of advantages that make it easier for millions of people to do their daily business. However, this technology carries certain risks and advantages. Let’s designate them.
- First of all, it is convenient, especially if you have several bank cards. To make a payment, there is no need to carry the card itself with you and risk losing it. All you have to do is install the app on your phone.
- In addition, all contactless payment transactions are very fast. After all, you do not need to transfer the card to the seller, wait until the card is inserted into the receiver, dial the pincode.
- For the same reason, contactless payment is the most hygienic compared to traditional cards and, especially, banknotes. In a number of countries around the world, this argument is one of the fundamental ones when choosing contactless cards.
- Finally, contactless payment through the app is very convenient when shopping online. You do not need to enter a lot of information every time, you can pay from your smartphone by going to the seller’s website.
The disadvantage of a contactless card is that it makes it more difficult to control finances. So, most of these cards for payments not exceeding 1000 rubles do not require the introduction of any passwords and codes.
This is used by scammers from time to time, receiving illegal benefits.
Finally, sometimes, due to an oversight of the cardholder, an unauthorized, accidental payment for goods using a contactless terminal can occur. However, the likelihood of such an event is quite low.
Protection against accidental payment
In order to protect yourself from accidental or unauthorized payment, you must follow the simple rules for using the distance card:
- First of all, it is worth keeping it in the inner pockets of your clothes or in your wallet – this will reduce the likelihood of a reader accidentally reading the card chip at the supermarket checkout or in another similar place.
- It is also necessary to set the minimum amount for debiting funds without entering a code. Usually, by default, the bank sets a limit of 1000 rubles. You can reduce this amount to 500 or 100, thereby protecting yourself from debiting funds.
- In addition, you need to set a limit on consecutive transactions with the card. This will avoid double debiting of funds as a result of a terminal failure or inaccurate actions of the cardholder.
Otherwise, the security measures in operation with a contactless payment card remain the same as with a regular bank card:
- It should not be transferred to third parties;
- always keep with you or in a safe place;
- not to disclose secret card data;
- set up SMS notifications – all this will largely protect the cardholder from financial losses.
What is the advantage of contactless cards?
In addition to convenience, contactless cards have two important advantages:
Payment speed. It takes 1 second to pay for a product or service worth up to 1000 rubles. You do not release the card from your hands, do not enter a PIN code – just touch the terminal. The waiting time in the queue is reduced significantly, this is true when you are in a hurry. For example, at a gas station or in a cafe during a lunch break.
Keep in mind that some terminals can charge up to 5000₽ without a PIN code – it depends on the settings of the acquiring bank.
Security. The card is always in your hands, you do not hand it over to the cashier and do not enter the PIN code in front of other customers. And the money will not be debited twice: immediately after the payment, the terminal is turned off.
Is it safe to use a contactless card?
Yes, the contactless card is safe. Making purchases without presenting a card and entering a PIN code is much safer, since no one sees the card details. In addition, contactless technology protects against double debits – after paying for the purchase, the terminal beeps and turns off automatically.
Can money be stolen from a contactless card by attaching the reader to a bag or pocket?
No. Explain why:
First, the intruder will be immediately identified. To buy a POS terminal, he would have to open a legal entity and conclude an agreement with a bank. In addition, terminals transfer money to accounts that cannot be anonymous. The scammer would reveal his passport details and get caught. Secondly, stealing money from a contactless card is technically very difficult. The maximum distance between the terminal and the card should be 4 cm. In this case, the attacker has only a few seconds while the terminal is active. In such conditions, it is difficult to find the victim’s wallet, get close to it and steal money from the card. It turns out that the risks are greater than the benefits. The idea of stealing turns out to be useless.
If I accidentally touch the terminal twice, will my money be charged both times?
No. The terminal is activated when the cashier enters the amount. This is valid for only a few seconds and for one payment. The terminal will stop exchanging with the card as soon as it receives the necessary data.
If you touch the terminal a second time, the operation will fail. The main thing is that the cashier does not enter a new amount.
What if my contactless card is stolen and all the money is spent?
If a scammer steals a card, he will not be able to withdraw cash, but he can make small purchases up to 1000 ₽ without a PIN code. If you see that money has been debited from the card, but you did not buy anything, call our contact center at 900 and block the card, the Bank employee will tell you about further actions.
Which card will be charged if you bring a wallet with two contactless cards to the terminal?
If there is more than one contactless card in the terminal coverage area, the payment will not be processed, and the terminal will display the inscription “Put one card”. Only you choose which card to pay with, the terminal will not do it.
Visa announced increase in purchases without a PIN will not be universal
From April 13, 2019, banks issuing cards of the Visa payment system will not be able to request a PIN code to confirm transactions with Visa contactless cards in the amount of up to 3 thousand rubles. The new rules of the payment system increase the previously established limit by three times from the previously valid level of 1 thousand rubles. RBC interviewed banks and found out that part of the innovation will be launched in stages and not on all devices for accepting cards.
The largest Visa card issuer, Sberbank, refused to answer the question whether it was ready to increase the limit for contactless payment without a pin code. VTB Bank said it was ready for changes from April 12, but indicated that “the Visa initiative is designed for limited business segments.” The essence of the restrictions in the bank was not clarified.
From April 12, holders of Visa cards issued by Alfa-Bank can no longer enter a PIN code within the new limit, the credit institution indicated. Otkritie and Raiffeisenbank promised that they would make all the necessary adjustments to increase the payment limit from April 13. The limit will apply to all POS-terminals in all business segments, the press service of Otkritie added. Promsvyazbank is considering the possibility of increasing the amount of transactions without a pin code on Visa cards, but it will gradually increase the limit in its acquiring network. Russian Standard Bank intends to follow the recommendations of the payment system after their official launch.
Why not for everyone
The Visa requirement is not strict, explains Victor Dostov, Chairman of the Electronic Money Association. According to him, if the bank does not change the limit on the day of the official launch of the new rules, then no penalties will follow. Banks need time to technically set everything up, so there will be no large-scale launch right on April 13 and, perhaps, not all Visa cardholders will be able to pay for purchases of up to 3,000 contactless cards without entering a pin code, the expert concluded.
By January 1, 2019, the market share of the Visa payment system was 39.5% against 36% for MasterCard and 24.5% for Mir cards. For the whole of 2018, Visa cards accounted for about 47.3% of payments totaling RUB 10.4 trillion. In 2018, 260 banks were engaged in the issuance and acquiring of Visa cards, the top three in terms of market share are Sberbank, VTB and Alfa-Bank.
The new rule applies to all POS-terminals, where the limit was initially in effect from the moment of its introduction, but does not apply to ATMs and cash desks in banks, points out Aleksey Krokhin, Head of Cash Flow Management Products at Raiffeisenbank. “The need to enter a pin code is determined by the settings of the POS terminal and the chip of the bank card with which the payment is made,” he explains, adding that the rules of the card issuer (the bank that issued it) may require the introduction of a pin code.
Why do we need a new limit
Visa previously reported that the initiative to increase the limit for payments without a PIN code takes into account the current stage of development of the payment market and the emerging new payment habits of Russians. According to Visa, Russia is in the top three countries in terms of the number of contactless payments (performed by contactless cards and smartphones via Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Android Pay and others).
The current limit of 1 thousand rubles. was set when the exchange rate was more than two times lower, and contactless payments themselves were new to the market, so now that one-touch payment has become commonplace, Visa decided to raise the limit to continue developing the market for non-cash payments, commented on the Visa initiative, the head of development of Alfa-Bank acquiring Denis Khrenov.
Bankers interviewed by RBC previously said that this decision would make the payment process even easier, but warned that it could lead to an increase in the number of physical card thefts. Kaspersky Lab has not recorded cases of theft of money from contactless cards using POS-terminals in the metro, although the version of the existence of this type of fraud is popular, Sergey Golovanov, a leading anti-virus expert at Kaspersky Lab, said earlier. He also added that there were no incidents related to the creation of such clone cards.
Up to what amount contactless payment is the limit of funds when paying by phone
The contactless payment method continues to win the trust of users. This technology allows you to pay for purchases quickly and without entering a password. It is enough to put a smartphone to the reader, and the withdrawal of funds will occur almost instantly. But to prevent attackers from gaining access to customers’ money, the developers set a limit when paying via NFC to a bank card. So up to what amount does contactless payment not ask for a pin code, and how does the process work?
Why are restrictions needed?
The contactless card limit is required to improve security. To withdraw funds, you do not need to enter a password, so the developers have set restrictions so that attackers cannot steal a lot of money by gaining access to the card.
Let’s simulate the situation: the user has lost bank plastic, or it was stolen by a fraudster. An attacker will not be able to withdraw a large amount without entering a pin code, so he will have to pay several checks. When the cardholder receives a message about the withdrawal of money, he needs to immediately block the card.
It will be difficult to withdraw money after several transactions in a row, because banks set restrictions on such actions.
At the same time, the cardholder himself can pay a check for 700-800 rubles without entering a PIN code. Further details on how much you can pay with a bank card without a password.
In megacities, the average check in a store often exceeds 1,000 rubles due to high prices, and the same Muscovites have to enter a password, contactless payment becomes meaningless. Residents of smaller cities actively use NFC, as prices in stores are noticeably lower, and the check rarely exceeds 1,000 rubles.
Limit on bank cards
Up to what amount can I pay for purchases without a PIN code? MasterCard and MIR cards have a limit of 1,000 rubles for payments without entering a pin code. If the check amount is less than 1,000, you can pay for your purchase in a store or at a gas station by simply swiping your card to the terminal.
The limit for Visa payment system cards is 3,000 rubles. In April, the American company tripled this figure for the convenience of its customers (in their opinion, Russia is one of the three countries in terms of the number of contactless cards issued).
Security also suffered, as in case of theft, attackers will be able to withdraw up to 3,000 rubles for 1 operation.
Google Pay limit
Google Pay is an Android payment system that allows you to pay for purchases using your smartphone. You can link multiple bank cards to it. The limit for contactless payment by phone is 1,000 rubles. How payment is made if the limit is exceeded:
A prerequisite is the presence of a terminal that supports contactless payment. The NFC reader must display an icon or inscription: “Put a card.” Also, in certain stores, if the limit is exceeded, they may require you to sign:
Why is it safe to use Google Pay? For the application to work on a smartphone, a password must be set to restrict unauthorized persons from accessing the client’s account.
Apple Pay
In Apple Pay, the limits on the amount for payment without entering a PIN code are also 1,000 rubles. The app works in the same way as Google Pay:
It is not recommended to set a light password, attackers can crack it and bypass the withdrawal limit.
What should I do if scammers stole money from my account?
The presence of a limit allows you to secure the money of bank customers. However, any loss is unpleasant. In this case, in accordance with 161-FZ “On the National Payment System”, the bank will return the stolen funds if their illegal withdrawal has been proven.
It is recommended to immediately block the card if an outsider tried to withdraw money from the account. Do this in your personal account, or call the financial institution.
Conclusion
The contactless payment limit is a forced measure applied by banks. Withdrawal restrictions help protect customer accounts from theft of large amounts. In almost every payment system, the limit is 1,000 rubles, but in April 2019, Visa tripled this amount, given the high prices in stores in megacities.
