Samsung Pay: what is this program
Samsung Pay is a mobile contactless payment service developed by Samsung Electronics and used on Samsung phones. The service allows users to pay for purchases using mobile phones and smart watches.
One of the main differences between Samsung Pay and its competitors is that it supports not only NFC payments, but also electromagnetic transfer technology (MST) payments. This allows you to pay even on older terms that only support magnetic tape cards.
Magnetic Secure Transmission or Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) technology transmits payment card information directly into the plastic card slot. This tricks the terminal into thinking that a real card has been swiped.
An application of the same name is used to provide the Samsung Pay service.
How to set up Samsung Pay
Samsung Pay is a contactless payment service using payment card data. Its launch took place in 2015 and since then the number of countries and banks supporting the system has increased significantly. This is due to the simplicity and ease of use, the safety of transactions and the lack of the need to carry a large number of cards. In this article, we will look at how to set up and use Samsung Pay, what this service is, what advantages it has.

The contactless payment application is included in the list of system applications and does not require a separate installation. If the smartphone is included in the above list, but the program shortcut is still missing in the system, you should follow a few simple steps:
- Register a Samsung account.
- Open your phone settings and go to the “Accounts” section.
- Press the inscription “Add”. Select “Samsung account” from the list.
- 3. Create a profile by entering all the necessary data. An email will be sent to the email address to confirm its performance and complete the registration.
- Check for a new firmware version.
- Go to the “About device” section in the smartphone settings.
- Select “Software update”, then “Update”. The search for files available for installation will begin.
- If updates are found, you should agree to the installation. The phone will download the data and perform all the necessary actions automatically.
Following the above steps will bring up the desired app icon. Otherwise, it remains to contact the service center or customer support.
Then you can set up Samsung Pay as follows:
- Launch the app and log in to your account.
- Confirm the fingerprint that will be used to gain access when making a payment. If the fingerprint has not been previously added to the system, then it can be scanned without leaving the program. If you do not want to use the fingerprint scanner, skip the step and enter a four-digit PIN code.
- The system is ready for use.
You can add a card immediately after setting up or postpone the action until the next time. Consider the process of entering payment data in more detail:
- Launch the app and select “Add a credit or debit card”.
- The card should be placed in front of the camera lens until the required information is recognized. The link at the bottom of the window allows you to enter 16 digits manually.
- Next, enter the owner’s first and last name, card expiration date and security code located on its back (CVC/CVV). We press the “Next” button.
- We agree to the terms of service.
- In the next window, select one of the card verification methods. Often this is sending a verification code in an SMS message.
- Enter the received password. A signature may also be required, which is added with a finger or with a stylus. If the addition is successful, the card details will open and a blue circle with a check mark will appear in the upper right corner.
For Samsung Pay to work, you need to set it up first. To do this, launch the Samsung Pay app, sign in with your Samsung account, and agree to the terms of use.
After that, set up a convenient way for you to unlock your phone. Only reliable unlock methods can be used with Samsung Pay. For example, an iris scan or a fingerprint.
The app will also ask you to enter a separate PIN code for Samsung Pay. This PIN will only be used in this app and is different from the main PIN that is used to unlock your phone.
This will take you to the main interface of the Samsung Pay app. Here you need to go to the “Payment” section and click on the “Add card” button.
To add a card, simply scan it with your phone’s camera.
If there are difficulties with scanning, you can click on the “Enter manually” button and fill in the card data yourself.
After entering the payment card data, the application will require you to perform verification using an SMS message. Your phone will receive an SMS with a code that you will need to enter in a special field.
The last step in setting up Samsung Pay is to enter your signature in a special field on the screen.
This completes the setting. Wait about 10 minutes for your card to successfully register with Samsung Pay. After that, the phone can be used to pay for purchases.

In order for the Samsung Pay contactless payment service to work, it must be supported not only by the phone, but also by the user’s bank. At the moment, the following payment cards can be connected to the service:
- Alfa-Bank (MasterCard and Visa);
- Tinkoff Bank (MasterCard and Visa);
- VTB24 (MasterCard and Visa);
- Rocketbank and Tochka (MasterCard);
- Yandex (MasterCard);
- Raiffeisenbank (MasterCard and Visa);
- MTS-Bank (MasterCard and Visa);
- Sberbank (MasterCard and Visa, except Electron series);
- Bank Saint Petersburg (MasterCard);
- Russian Standard (MasterCard);
- “Opening” (MasterCard and Visa);
- BINBANK (MDM Bank cards)
In the future, the list of banks and cards will expand. Contact your bank support for detailed information about the support of this service.
Samsung Pay developers announce support for Visa and MasterCard. The list of banks that can provide this service is quite large and new participants are constantly replenishing it. Among the popular Russian representatives are Raiffeisen Bank Aval, Sberbank, VTB24 and others. In the Republic of Belarus, these are Belgazprombank, BPS-Sberbank, VTB and MTBank.
Reissuing a plastic card after expiration or loss implies re-adding data to the system.
By the terms of the agreement, it is forbidden to add a credit card of another family member. Identification in the service involves the use of personal information.
Before you figure out how to set up Samsung Pay, you should make sure that it is technically possible. Contactless payment is available on the following Samsung phone models:
- Note8 and 5;
- S8 and S8 ;
- S6 and S6 Edge ;
- A8 and A8 ;
- A7, A5 – 2017 release;
- A3 – 2017;
- J7 and J5 produced in 2017;
- S3 classic.
Samsung Pay is also available on S6 Edge and Gear Sport models, but only with NFC technology. The system is not available on other devices. If the smartphone was purchased in another country, but is planned to be used in Russia or the Republic of Belarus, then you will not be able to use the function.
Separate mention should be made of phones where root access was obtained or a custom firmware version was installed. Obtaining superuser rights and changing the operating system leads to a decrease in the security level of the device, so the use of the contactless payment system will be impossible.
If the phone supports the technology and meets the specified requirements, you can start studying the detailed instructions.
How to use Samsung Pay?
After setting up the service, you can go shopping in the store. Let’s figure out how to use the system:
- Launch the application using the shortcut. For quick activation, you need to swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen (works even on a locked and inactive screen).
- Select a payment card and authorize with a fingerprint or password.
- Bring the phone to the terminal, then sign and receive a check. In the case of terminals where magnetic tape technology is used, the amount to be written is entered by the cashier after recognition of the smartphone. If a cash register with a built-in terminal is used, the purchase amount is entered before the device is recognized.
Contactless payment is very easy to use. It is enough to perform the procedure once to remember the sequence of actions.
How Samsung Pay works
Once everything is set up, Samsung Pay is ready to go. To pay for purchases, you need to tell the cashier that you will pay with a card, and then swipe up from the bottom of the screen. This gesture will automatically launch the Samsung Pay app and get it ready to go.
After launching the application, you will need to log in using one of the configured methods. This could be an iris scan, a fingerprint check, or a PIN code. After authorization, the phone must be brought to the payment terminal.
To pay using NFC technology, the phone must be brought to the top of the terminal.
If the terminal does not support contactless payment using NFC, then the phone must be brought to the magnetic stripe reader (on the right side of the terminal). In this case, the payment will be made using Samsung MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) technology, which emulates the magnetic stripe of a payment card.
After that, the terminal should fix the payment, and a corresponding message should appear on the phone.
Samsung Pay Security
Some users refuse to use the system because they are afraid of disclosing personal data and losing money. You can get rid of such fears if you find out how the Samsung Pay security system is built:
- Tokenization. Each operation is accompanied by the creation of a token (a special digital cipher), excluding the transfer of the owner’s personal information.
- Confirmation of money transfer by fingerprint or PIN code. Even in case of loss, no one will be able to pay in the store using the data of the owner of the smartphone. You can also use the Find My Mobile service by blocking access to the device and deleting payment data.
- Samsung KNOX is a security system that prevents hacker attacks. It encrypts the details and places them inside a special container, so even infecting the phone with malicious code will not allow you to get secret data.
Based on the information provided, it can be concluded that using Samsung Pay is simple, convenient and safe. After spending a little time setting up, you can forever get rid of the need to carry a thick wallet filled with many bank and club cards.
