Is it safe?
When the HCE system first appeared on the market, it was considered extremely insecure. This was due to the fact that information about bank cards was not stored on a physical medium, which means that it could easily be copied and stolen.
To date, a lot of work has been done to make HCE technology truly safe.
Here are the security measures that have been implemented:
Now you can be sure that using the HCE wallet is completely safe. It is even more difficult to steal your money or make a payment without your knowledge with this technique than with conventional bank cards.
How it works
HCE technology is an online bank card emulator. It duplicates all information about your card: number, expiration date, CVC code and internal data, and then reproduces them at the time of payment.
Data is transmitted through the NFC module, the standard of which corresponds to the standard of bank cards. Therefore, the payment is processed as if you were using a regular card.
Emulation can be done in 2 ways:
The first option is considered safer.
In addition to bank cards, the Host-based Card Emulation system allows you to download other cards – bonus, transport, and so on. All this is also done through separate applications.
NFC and wireless payments via Google Pay do not work on Xiaomi (Redmi)
Xiaomi (Redmi) smartphone users use the NFC module for contactless payments through bank terminals. Most of the problems with NFC are related to the fact that it is impossible to make a purchase, while the person is at the checkout, most likely a queue has formed behind him, he is worried and does not know how to fix it and why NFC stopped working.
I will relieve you of this stress and show you the correct NFC settings on Xiaomi, which allows you to pay for purchases in a second using the Google Pay service.
Make sure you have entered your valid bank card details in your Google Pay settings.
Instructions for setting up NFC were made on a Xiaomi Mi 9 SE phone with MIUI 11 firmware, if your smartphone has MIUI 10 installed, the steps will change slightly, but in principle everything will remain the same, proceed in the same way and Google Pay will work for you.
Enter General Settings and find “Connection and Sharing”.
Find the “NFC” item and activate it to start the module.
Now enter the Security Element Location menu.
You will see 2 options: “HCE Wallet” and “SIM Wallet”. It’s usually recommended to choose HCE, and indeed, this option worked for me on the Mi 5 phone, but on the Mi 9, SIM mode is selected, and Google Pay payments work fine.
Now enter the “Contactless payment” setting.
Make sure the Google Pay app is selected in the Default Payment menu. Set the “Use default app” to “Always”.
Next, we need to set up the program for payment, for this, select the “Applications” item in the general menu.
Then click on “All Apps”.
In the search bar, type “Pay” and as a result select a program from Google.
Enter the “Other Permissions” menu.
Make sure “NFC” is set to “Allow”.
For persuasiveness, select the “Activity control” item, this is not necessary, but if the payment does not go through, it is worth checking it too.
Select “No Limit”.
After the manipulations, restart Xiaomi and try to make a purchase, now NFC is working.
Making a payment
This manual will be useful for both potential buyers and real owners of Xiaomi smartphones. It was thanks to the latter that it became known about the existence of a problem in the operation of NFC and Google Pay on Xiaomi smartphones. Basically, new phones from the company, such as Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro, Mi9 and Mi9T, are affected by it. What to do if you have one of these devices? Let’s figure it out.
Which Xiaomi smartphones are not suitable for paying for purchases in stores
It should be clarified right away that Google Pay will not work if:
If you purchased a smartphone from an authorized reseller or in one of the stores in your city, most likely the device meets all Google Pay requirements. But, if the phone was bought on AliExpress or on another Chinese site, it is highly likely that it has an unlocked bootloader or a Chinese firmware version is installed on it. In this case, in order to use Google Pay, you will have to install the MIUI global firmware and block the Bootloader.
HCE Wallet or SIM
When you enable NFC on your device, the system prompts you to select the location of the security module. It can be an embedded security element, a SIM wallet, and an HCE wallet.
Above we talked about the differences between these technologies, but the question still remains, which wallet to choose – HCE or SIM? How to understand which option works on your device?
The answer is simple: when choosing between indoor unit, HCE or SIM, always select HCE. And no matter what phone or mobile operator you have, other standards are already a thing of the past and are practically not implemented anywhere.
The only exception will be Xiaomi mobile phones with MIUI 10 and older. This is due to the fact that when localizing the new version, the translators messed up something and swapped NFC wallets.
When choosing between HCE or SIM on Xiaomi, open the “Security Element Location” section and see which option is at the very bottom. You need exactly him.
What is HCE Technology
Many of our compatriots often wonder about the modern hce technological solution implemented on mobile phones. With the help of experts, we will try to understand the problems of consumers who are interested in several areas at once:
HCE technology allows using specially created software to carry out a kind of duplication of NFC cards on modern gadgets and other mobile devices. At the same time, it is possible to implement the Host Card Emulation solution in bank, transport and other cards. Even loyalty cards can be connected to the system, providing simultaneous:
The world community got acquainted with the possibilities of NSE technology at the end of 2013, when a new phone model on the Android KitKat 4.4 platform was released to the market. It was on it that a serious technological breakthrough was made in the implementation of NFC transactions using mobile devices. Prior to the advent of this decision, information about payments made was stored in a specially created secure segment, which was located:
The disadvantage of this method was the need for developers of NFC payment services to negotiate with secure segment media providers. At the same time, users who wish to use these transaction options often had to change their SIM card or mobile phone.
NSE technology makes it possible to emulate almost all contactless cards directly on a mobile device without regulating the issues of secure storage of information and its subsequent processing with their developers. Emulation is done by:
It should be noted that HCE technology is compatible with any POS equipment that supports the NFC contactless payment function. In our country, there are about 150,000 such devices at various retail outlets. At the same time, their number is constantly increasing.
This solution is supported by most modern smartphones. Phones with HCE must have platforms above:
The use of NSE technology is not possible on Apple models, since the corporation prefers to implement its own technological solutions using the developed cryptoprocessor. Therefore, loading payment cards into smartphones of the Apple model range is possible only through the manufacturer.
By making HCE payments, the client shifts security issues from the mobile operator to the card issuer. At the same time, most of the data necessary for transactions is stored directly in the gadget’s memory. If the phone is locked, then payment transactions are impossible. In this regard, the level of protection is much higher than that provided by issuers to their cards, including contactless payment products.
Carrying out NSE payments completely eliminates the possibility of reading secret information by intruders even when using special equipment. Also, attempts to clone the device are completely impossible, since every time the gadget is launched, an automatic comparison is made on a variety of parameters. If a single discrepancy is detected, the payment transaction is blocked.
Most new generation smartphones have security systems that instantly block HCE payments or a technology-linked card if suspicious plan activity is detected. At the same time, the user has the opportunity to protect each payment made with one-time passwords received through the mobile application. Additional protection will be provided by biometric sensors built into gadgets.
However, making payments involves a number of difficulties:
How to check if there is NFC in a Xiaomi smartphone
A full-fledged NFS chip cannot be added if it is not in the phone. It will not work and remove if it is already there. Therefore, if the presence of a sensor is important to you, carefully choose a new Xiaomi smartphone.
There are several ways to check if a phone has a chip.
How to set up NFC for payment on Xiaomi smartphones
Most modern smartphones are equipped with NFS technology, which allows you to make contactless payments. The phone replaces cash and a physical card, which is very convenient. In the article we will tell you how to set up NFC on Xiaomi step by step and what to do if the module does not work.
Compatibility
In order for the HCE option to work on your phone, one of the following operating systems must be installed on it:
In addition, an NFC module must be installed in the smartphone. Not all devices are still equipped with it, so check the specifications carefully before buying.
This technology is not compatible with iPhone and iPad. This is due to the fact that Apple does not cooperate with third-party developers and supports only its own service, Apple Pay, as a payment system. The technological solution for it was also developed only for “apple” technology.
How to enable NFC on Xiaomi
The sensor is off from the box. Indeed, in the on state, it continuously creates electromagnetic radiation, consuming a charge. If you decide to use the sensor, you need to enable it.
You can find the chip in the settings in the same place where you looked for its presence, in the “Connection and Sharing” item. Follow the arrow and activate the slider so that it turns blue. This method is convenient in that on the same screen you can find the option “Location of the security element”. It is needed in order to select “SIM Wallet” (for a Xiaomi smartphone from version 10. For earlier ones, change it to “NSE Wallet”. After that, contactless payment is set up.
Easy to connect
Installing Wallet on your phone is as easy as shelling pears. We install the application from the HUAWEI AppGallery or download it from the developer’s website, scan a bank card using the camera or fill in the details manually, and then accept the terms of the user agreement. Wow! Map in your pocket. Now, if NFC is activated in the options, you can bring your smartphone to the terminal for payment in stores.
Wallet works with cards of many Russian banks, including Alfa-Bank, VTB, Otkritie, Raiffeisenbank and Tinkoff. The full list is available on the website. If your financial institution is not among those listed, the card can still be entered into the Wallet. True, contactless payments will not be available, but it can pay for purchases online. The application so far only supports the Mastercard payment system, but the connection to Visa, according to developers from HUAWEI, is just around the corner.
Yes. There are no reasons for concern. Your card photo is processed locally on your smartphone and is not shared online. As for storing information in the application: all data is encrypted using reliable algorithms. Card usage is PCI DSS certified. By the way, the entrance to the Wallet can be password-protected or fingerprint recognition can be set up.
Known Issues
There are no modern technologies without drawbacks, this also applies to Host-based Card Emulation. Among the serious disadvantages of this function are the following:
Some of these disadvantages are relative. Others can be fixed over time – now the technology is still developing and improving.
What to do if you failed to set up contactless payment on Xiaomi
It is not always possible to set up payment by phone quickly. If you can’t pay with your phone, try to hold your smartphone longer, turn it around without turning the screen over. If this does not help, check the following settings:
One of the reasons for the failure may be that the Google Pay application does not have NFC enabled. To activate it, perform the following actions:
If this does not help, try removing the permission to switch to economy mode. You can restart your smartphone or turn off the module and turn it on again. This often helps if the function worked before.

MasterCard claims that the key advantage of HCE is an open architecture that allows users not only to make payments, but also to use loyalty programs and use transport services. At the same time, banks do not need to spend money on issuing plastic cards with secure elements.
“Consumers are now shopping and paying in a way that best suits their needs and lifestyle, and with whatever gadget they have. In order to meet user expectations regarding convenience, we must increase the availability of services in the market. The use of HCE provides ample opportunity to launch more NFC-based solutions,” said James Anderson, Head of Emerging Payments at MasterCard.
It should also be said that HCE support is already built into the updated Android KitKat 4.4 operating system, which began rolling out in November 2013.
MasterCard plans to publish its HCE specification during the first half of 2014.
In February of this year, Visa also announced support for HCE. This payment system has developed a special application for Android, which allows you to pay for services even in fast foods, even in serious financial institutions. In the company itself, this tool is called the “virtual card” of the user. It is also emphasized here that all confidential information about the user’s bank account is not stored on the smartphone itself, but in the Visa cloud storage. In theory, this should provide even more reliable protection than if it were stored on a bank card chip.

This completes the NFC payment setup. And now it’s time to talk about how to pay via phone.
Resume
HCE is an excellent and secure technology for making contactless payments, which is implemented in many modern smartphones and tablets.
To use it, you need an NFC-enabled device and a payment app. Save your card details in it – and then put your phone to the terminal, and the money will be debited automatically.
This function does not work on Apple gadgets, but only because their own solutions are implemented there.
It is less and less common to meet a person at the checkout who pays in cash, because most people have switched to bank cards. It is faster and more convenient for both cashiers and customers.
However, technology does not stand still, and an even more convenient payment method has appeared – contactless payments. They allow you to pay for any purchases using your smartphone.
To make such a payment, you do not need to carry a bank card with you or remember your PIN code. All you need is to have a phone with an NFC module and bring it to the terminal.
Such payment is implemented for the most part using the HCE payment technology.
Let’s tell you more about this technology. Let’s take a look at how it works, how secure it is, and also figure out what to choose in the contactless payment settings on your device: HCE wallet or SIM.
This technology is not compatible with iPhone and iPad. This is due to the fact that Apple does not cooperate with third-party developers and supports only its own service, Apple Pay, as a payment system. The technological solution for it was also developed only for “apple” technology.
How to pay by phone instead of a card
Contactless payment by touching your smartphone is only available if NFC is enabled on your mobile device. It can be activated through the notification shade (control center) or device settings.
NFC consumes very little power, so you can always keep it on
Now, when you go shopping, just unlock the screen and bring your smartphone up to 10 centimeters away from the back of the payment terminal or touch the device to it. If the purchase amount does not exceed the limit (for example, in Mir Pay it is 3,000 ₽), you do not need to do anything else, the transaction will go through instantly. If the limit is exceeded, you will need to enter the PIN code of the card or put your finger on the fingerprint scanner on your phone.
It is not necessary to put the smartphone close, but sometimes NFC does not work at a distance of more than 5 centimeters
Although you are prompted to select the default application in the smartphone settings, you can pay with SberPay and Mir Pay at the same time without changing the settings. Make Mir Pay the main means of payment and pay through it by removing the screen lock. In the case of SberPay, before making a transaction, click on the service icon located on the main screen.
Contactless payment in Russia
If this material had been published a couple of years ago, I would simply say that contactless payment in Russia works the same as in the whole world. But at the beginning of 2023, reservations have to be made. Be that as it may, NFC works in Russia, though not with all cards and not with all applications.
As for the first point, you need a MIR card to make contactless payments by tapping your smartphone to the terminal. Visa and MasterCard systems do not work at the moment. There is an alternative option – payment by QR code, which is gradually gaining popularity in our country. It can be used by holders of any cards, be it Visa, MasterCard or MIR.
Now NFC payment is available only to MIR cardholders
Another point is common, it applies to everyone, regardless of their country of residence. The main condition for making contactless payments by tapping your smartphone to the terminal is the presence of an NFC sensor on your device. The NFC Check application will help you check its availability. Run the program and click the “NFC Check” button. We saw a green checkmark and the inscription “Supported” – feel free to proceed with choosing an application for payment.
When choosing between HCE or SIM on Xiaomi, open the “Location of the security element” section and see which option is at the very bottom. You need exactly him.
What to do if Google Pay is not working on Xiaomi phone
If you installed Google Pay on your smartphone, linked a bank card, then went to the store and tried to pay for purchases using your phone, but the payment failed (and you tried again several times), most likely the problem is not in a faulty terminal , but on a mobile device. First of all, check if the NFC function is enabled – swipe from the top edge of the screen to open the quick settings panel and make sure that the “NFC” item is lit in blue.
If NFC is enabled, proceed to the next step. Go to “Settings” and go to the “Connection and Sharing” subsection or to “Additional features” (if this item is present in two sections: “Wireless networks” and “Special features”, then open the first one). Then click on the “Location of the security element” item. Select “HCE Wallet” from the available options. According to users of specialized forums, switching the “SIM Wallet” setting to “HCE Wallet” solves the problem in 90% of cases. After completing this step, payment using Google Pay becomes available.
How does it work? HCE (Host Card Emulation) is a technology that allows you to use software that does not require a dedicated crypto processor to carry out payment transactions. Simply put, HCE technology allows you to emulate cards for contactless payments so as not to write information about them in a special registry, which can be located on a SIM card, phone memory or microSD. When using a different architecture, there is a need for compatibility with dozens of different hardware components that Xiaomi does not seem to support.
In addition to activating the bank card emulation function, you need to grant permission to run Google Pay in the background, and make sure that the application has been granted access to the NFC hardware components. To do this, open “Settings”, go to the “All applications” section and select “Google Pay” in the list of programs (to quickly find the application, enter its name in the search bar). Make sure the Autoplay feature is enabled (if not, activate the toggle switch), and then open the “Other Permissions” item.
Select “NFC” and “Run in Background” one by one and grant them permissions.
It is also recommended to return to the Google Pay settings page, open the “Activity Control” item and select “No restrictions” among the available options.
After completing all the above steps, Google Pay will work again and you will be able to pay using your Xiaomi smartphone with a built-in NFC chip.
HCE and SIM security element is not either-or choice
JUNE 11, 2014
LIVE FROM MOBILE ASIA EXPO 2014: SIM-Based Secure Benefit Element and Host Card Emulation (HCE) Offers Every Financial Institution and NFC-Based Payment Approaches to NFC-Based Mobile Payments Are Not Mutually Exclusive, According to New GSMA Guidelines and the British consulting company Consult Hyperion.
In fact, a combination of the two may be the best option, depending on the application and markets.
Google introduced HCE for Android 4.4 (KitKat) last year.
“The recent inclusion of HCE on Android opens up the ability to perform NFC payments without using the SIM-Secure Element, and HCE also has the potential to eliminate the complexities associated with SIM-based NFC payments,” said Alex Sinclair, CTO of GSMA.
On the other hand, SIM-based NFC offers a proven, secure solution that is already being used commercially, Sinclair said. He added that the challenge for operators is to simplify the provisioning process, which will improve the SIM-based approach.
“MasterCard is technology agnostic, enabling mobile payments so that current card accounts can be seamlessly and securely used from consumers’ favorite electronic devices,” said Anderson.
A guide aimed at financial institutions shows that HCE does make some aspects of NFC-based payments easier, but that’s only part of the story. “HCE requires a new approach to security in terms of ecosystem integration, risk management, and certification processes,” the post reads.
In contrast, the SIM-based approach is well defined and operators are considering further simplification, according to guidance.
The guidance offers banks several tips to consider when planning their transition to NFC-based mobile payments, and weighs the two approaches. The advice includes understanding the local environment as well as understanding the type of transaction they are targeting (HCE is likely more suited to lower cost transactions where security is less important).
In addition, the guidance states that a hybrid combining a safe element and HCE may be the most effective solution in the medium term. This will allow the SIM to fill in the authentication and security gaps in HCE, he said. It also recommends flexibility in the strategy adopted by financial institutions and encourages cooperation. “Until HCE is standardized, the risk remains that banks may not be flexible enough or block banks,” it said.

Instructions on how to connect, set up and use NFS on Xiaomi
More and more modern smartphones are equipped with NFC chips, allowing you to quickly make contactless payments. Due to the fact that they are popular, they are even put on budget models. Consider how to set up NFC on Xiaomi smartphones.
Google Pay not working on Xiaomi smartphone
NFC payment apps
Since NFC payment is available only to MIR cardholders, the optimal application is Mir Pay. Probably, some of you will remember that the MIR works in Samsung Pay, but I hasten to make a reservation: only on Samsung smartphones that have passed the EAC (PCT) certification. I propose to learn about what Rostest is in a separate article.
Mir Pay is the only app that can replace Google Pay right now
Today Mir Pay is the best program for NFC payments, but not the only one. She has an opponent in the face of the SberPay system, which is available in the SberBank application for Android. However, it only works with MIR cards from this bank. All other organizations offer to use either Mir Pay or payment by QR code.

After linking a bank card to a smartphone, you can go to the store and pay contactless. But first you need to make sure that they accept payment in this way.
The merchant activates the terminal. When the payment amount appears on the screen, bring the smartphone to it, turning it around with its back panel. The distance between them should be about 2 cm. So the device chips will be as close to each other as possible. They are waiting for the system to announce the payment with a sound signal.
HCE technology will replace banking plastic with smartphones
NFC chip-based solutions will help triple the number of contactless payments in the world by 2018.
On March 21, Russian owners of bank cards issued by Rossiya Bank and SMP Bank experienced difficulties with making payments after sanctions imposed by the United States on the owners of these financial institutions: Yuri Kovalchuk and the brothers Arkady and Boris Rotenberg. Meanwhile, developed countries are preparing for a significant increase in the use of mobile payments on a new technological platform.
Analytical company Juniper Research predicts that by 2018 the number of contactless payments will triple and amount to 9.9 billion transactions per year. The main driver of the industry in this case will be the HCE technology – Host Card Emulation, with the help of which banks will be able to issue credit cards without a physical, plastic carrier. The technology is actively supported by the PayPal payment system. How do these solutions work?
Host Card Emulation is essentially a virtual credit card. But only if you need a piece of plastic with identification data written on it to work with a regular card, then here all the necessary data is written directly to the smartphone.
In theory, it should all work like this. The user enters any favorite restaurant without a wallet, puts a smartphone to a special reader. The terminal contacts the restaurant’s server, identifies the user, gives him an order that is “usual” for this time of day, and immediately sends a request to the bank to pay for the purchase. Since the terminal has all the data necessary for the transaction, and it is able to transfer them to the client’s bank, the amount required for payment will be read quickly and automatically – without the participation of the client. All this can significantly increase the speed and quality of customer service – especially in cases where we are talking about habitual consumer behavior: for example, when a user buys coffee every morning at a Starbucks establishment close to home or traditionally stops by a store after work for bread and milk .
From a technical point of view, NFC (Near Field Communication) chips will serve all these processes. They are ideal for this: data exchange is fast, but only with direct contact between the smartphone and the terminal. So false positives are excluded, and threats from scammers are minimized.
Down with plastic!
Since the program is a full-fledged wallet, it is reasonable to transfer all discount and bonus cards to an electronic format. They are entered into the utility using photography and presented at the checkout in the form of a barcode on the smartphone screen.
A nice bonus — contact information of the organization is attached to the discount card. So you can instantly contact the company without wasting time searching for a website or phone number on the Internet.
In addition to storing existing cards, “Wallet” allows you to get new ones. The application has a lot (there is a list here) of partners that provide bonuses for users. So you should often look into the “Discounts” section, where promotional codes and special offers from the country’s largest retail chains are published – you will almost certainly find the right stores.
Another argument in favor of electronic payments: it’s so easy to support the Wallet’s eco-project to protect the environment. In order not to carry a bunch of discount cards with you, the easiest way is to open them in the application, and hand over the already unnecessary “plastic” for recycling. For example, in VkusVill stores, or use the Collector separate collection containers. And here is another achievement in the savings of the environment.
The same principle applies to contactless smart cards such as public transport fare cards.
NFC technology offers to get rid of unnecessary plastic. Every smartphone has a processor thousands of times more powerful than the one on a plastic card. At the same time, NFC is used for data exchange – a wireless data transfer technology similar to Bluetooth or WiFi. Among its features is that it works only at a very small distance between devices. This is necessary in order to eliminate the possibility of a “random” connection.
An important point: NFC uses the same ISO 14443 data encryption standard for communication, which is used in all modern bank cards and electronic travel cards. Thanks to this, 100% compatibility of NFC smartphones, contactless cards and the existing reception infrastructure is realized. It turns out that if you install a banking application on your smartphone, it will connect to all terminals using an NFC chip in the same way as a bank card does. That is, to deploy NFC technology, you do not need to deploy some new expensive infrastructure.
Setting up contactless payment
1. Download the app and install in the usual way.
3. Click Add Card and select a card type.
4. Take a photo of the card or enter the data yourself: number, expiration date and CVV 2. Also indicate the information about the owner: full name, residential address, phone number.

What to do if contactless payment does not work
It happens that even after all the settings, NFC payment does not work. Perhaps the problem is related to the location of the sensor or its power. It is usually placed on the side of the camera or below it. In the case, the accuracy of operation for obvious reasons is reduced.
NFC is usually located near the camera block
In addition, you must make sure that the application for payment is correctly selected, and that the card is valid and has enough funds on it. If still nothing happens, do the following:
- Open the NFC settings on your phone.
- Go to the “Location of the security element” section.
- Select “HCE Wallet”.
Often, contactless payment works only through the HCE wallet, which does not affect the process in any way
Such manipulations often help out when NFC does not work on Xiaomi. Check if there is something similar in your phone settings. In addition, the device must have an up-to-date version of the payment application. And do not forget that sometimes Mir Pay does not work, for which there are a lot of specific reasons.
How to use NFC on Xiaomi
NFC works at a distance of up to 10 cm. This increases the level of payment security. Because it is difficult for attackers to catch and hack the signal due to the small radius of action. The module can connect to only one device, so you won’t be able to accidentally pay for someone else’s goods.
Transferring large files from a Xiaomi smartphone is not a good idea. The transfer speed here is not higher than 400 KB / s. Therefore, it is better to use another method. Google Pay and NFC block the Bootloader to work. If your phone has custom firmware or root installed, you will not be able to make payments in this way.
