How to use NFC on your phone to pay, which banks support the technology and what programs will be needed for contactless payment for purchases?

NFC features

First of all, it is worth noting that you can use NFC communications to pay bills and purchases. To do this, Google offered the Wallet application. Many banks have supported the idea of contactless payment by phone. N FC adapters are installed in terminals for cashless payments in shops and cafes.

In addition to how to use NFC on your phone as a payment method, you can exchange data between devices. It was said above that the speed of such a connection is very low by modern standards – about 400 kbps. Therefore, the technology of combining communication methods was invented. With the help of NFC, devices “recognize” each other, and a connection occurs, and further file transfer is carried out via Bluetooth or wi-fi direct. This provides the possibility of exchanging at high speed, and the connection occurs only by touching the back covers of smartphones.

At the same time, work with NFC tags is possible only if it is available in both phones. This is how Android Beam technology works and its Samsung counterpart Sbeam is a great way to transfer data on an Android phone.

Also, with the help of tags, you can quickly transfer contacts from android to another user.

What is contactless payment by phone?

How to use NFC on your phone to pay, which banks support the technology and what programs will be needed for contactless payment for purchases?

In simple terms, NFC (stands for Near Field Communication) is contactless payment through a mobile device. This technology was introduced to the world back in 2004. It is a high-frequency communication between devices for the purpose of transmitting any data.

At first glance, it looks like Bluetooth already familiar to many, but this connection is supported only within a small radius – no more than 10 cm. One of the main areas of application is payment for goods or services with a smartphone, without the need to use a bank account in the process map.

The undoubted advantages of using this technology include:

  1. Security. The connection between devices is established in just a fraction of a second, and the radius of influence is only a few centimeters. Thanks to this, you can, for example, pay for purchases in a store and not worry about the safety of your data.
  2. Convenience. The technology works in such a way that interference in the process is minimal. For example, a bank card is linked to the phone once and subsequently no payment data is required.
  3. Small size. The NFC chip is very small and does not affect the size of the gadget or its weight in any way.
  4. Save energy. By itself, this chip does not require large amounts of energy, which means that this will not significantly affect the operating time of the smartphone.
  5. Does not require additional payments. NFC does not have any subscription fees or other recurring fees.
  6. Shopping speed. There is no need to look for a card in a bag or pockets, and then dial a pin code, which means that you can make a payment a little faster.

But still, you should pay attention to some nuances that you should immediately remember:

  1. Not all smartphones have an NFC chip. This technology is quite common and is found on mobile devices from various manufacturers, but still, at the moment, not every phone supports the contactless payment function.
  2. The chip is powered by the smartphone, which means that if the phone is turned off or the battery runs out, the payment will not work.
  3. Some companies and institutions do not use technology in their establishments. In other words, not all payment terminals have a chip, thanks to which you can pay only with a smartphone.
  4. Since the technology has a low transfer rate, it is not recommended to use it to send large files such as photos, videos, audio.

It is very important to understand that contactless payment technology is not a ready-made application or program, but only an interface, i.e. base for data exchange. Therefore, in order to use all its features, you need to install at least one application on your smartphone. Thanks to the developers, the choice is quite wide. Below we will consider the main programs for paying through nfs. They are based on the two most popular types of OS.

Apple Pay

This application is available for all owners of gadgets on the IOS operating system.

It is downloaded and installed through the official App Store. Only “young” iPhones are equipped with a payment chip. At the moment, Iphone6, 7, 8, 10 and X, as well as their extended versions, can boast of this feature.

Android Pay

How to use NFC on your phone to pay, which banks support the technology and what programs will be needed for contactless payment for purchases?

Very popular app among android smartphone users. Installed for free through the Play Market.

Samsung Pay

This is a more focused payment app than the previous two.

It is available only for those who have a Samsung smartphone.

However, only the latest versions of smartphones support contactless payment – A5, A7, S6, S7 and their analogues closest in terms of release date and modifications.

How to set the settings so that you can pay with your phone with nfc without using a bank card?

For Android smartphones, you must first go to the main menu, then to the settings section. There select “Wireless networks”, then click “More”. If there is a contactless payment technology in the mobile phone, it will be reflected in the menu. If the option is not enabled, you need to check the box next to the NFC item.

For gadgets from Apple, no such action is required. You will not find an item in the menu dedicated specifically to NFC. To activate this feature, you only need to install Apple Pay and register the card.

Contactless payment options mean payment for goods with a bank card without installation in the reader. It is enough to bring a “credit card” at a distance of 10 cm from the terminal and the amount corresponding to the purchase will be debited from the account. If the check is less than 999 rubles, then you do not need to enter a pin code. Thanks to NFC technology, users can pay with a phone, watch or bracelet that has a chip embedded in it.

How to use NFC on your phone to pay, which banks support the technology and what programs will be needed for contactless payment for purchases?

As for the bank card, the radio wave icon should be displayed on it, and there is also an inscription: “PayWave” or “PayPass”.

Today, a bank card issued in the “Wallet” can pay for purchases in stores that accept MasterCard PayPass cards around the world, and Internet access on the phone is not required for this. Bank terminals at such points of sale are marked with a contactless payment logo (an oval logo with waves to the right), which is placed exactly in the place where the antenna is located in the reader, and it is necessary to apply the phone (where the antenna is located in its case) to this logo, even if it’s on the terminal screen.

The location of the antenna varies depending on the phone model. For example, in Philips Xenium W336 and Philips Xenium W5888 smartphones, the antenna is located just below the center of the back panel, but in HTC One it is located higher – behind the rear camera, since the phone case is metal, the radio signal passes through narrow plastic sections in the shape of the letter “T”. “.

Bank terminals equipped with contactless readers have 4 color indicators. The first means ready for work, the second means reading, the third means reading is completed and you can remove the card, and the fourth is the result of reading.

When paying with a bank card on your phone, just like when paying with a regular plastic card, you may be asked to enter a PIN code (which can be obtained by calling the bank) or sign a check. For purchases under RUB 1,000, neither a PIN nor a signature is required.

The “Wallet” application is not an electronic wallet or payment system, as, say, the well-known Visa QIWI Wallet and analogues. “Wallet” is primarily a universal interface to applications (cards) in Secure Element. Thanks to this approach, the phone becomes a “universal interactive plastic card.”

The main role of the application is to display issued or available cards and provide a communication channel between Secure Element and TSM. Also, “Wallet” gives the user the ability to interactively manage the cards loaded in the Secure Element.

The application is pre-installed on compatible phones at the factory or added with a software update for such phones (at the time of writing, these are HTC One, Philips W8555 and Philips Xenium W336, and HTC One Dual SIM, HTC One Max, HTC will be added soon One SV, HTC Desire 500 and HTC Desire 600). Other models and manufacturers will appear later.

How to use NFC on your phone to pay, which banks support the technology and what programs will be needed for contactless payment for purchases?

The first card that is available in the Wallet today is a prepaid bank card from TCS Bank. “Prepaid” means that the card is issued without concluding a written agreement with the bank, is not associated with your other cards in the bank, and also, in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation, has restrictions on one transaction (no more than 15,000 rubles) and the total amount of transactions per month ( no more than 40,000 rubles). When the user’s application for issuance is fulfilled, the card is delivered to the phone within 10 minutes on average.

The bank card loaded into the Wallet is not virtual, as much as we would like to use this term for an intangible card. After personalization and activation, the card really exists “physically” in the phone and interacts with the terminal at the checkout in the store in the same way as its plastic progenitor, and the banking term “virtual” is used for cards intended exclusively for payments on the Internet, and does not imply interaction with physical infrastructure and many other functions of card products.

How NFC works in the phone

The NFC phone’s wireless communication system works on the principle of electromagnetic wave conversion. The circuit resembles a classic detector receiver.

There are two types of NFC tags:

  1. Active – require an additional power supply and control, they can transmit any signals.
  2. Passive – operate without power and contain specific immutable information, i.e. they can only transmit a pre-programmed signal.

Consider the example of the connection of two phones.

There is a coil and a capacitor, which are an oscillating circuit; the diode detects an external magnetic field and sends this signal to the reader – this is the circuit of the NFC tag.

There are two devices with such labels, when you bring them to each other, the label of one of them induces its vibrations to the second label – they are detected and the second device “responds” to the first one. Thus, the process of data exchange, identification, etc. is cyclically repeated

This is a generalized principle of the NFC system in the phone.

Which phones support

nfcjf

Before linking the card to a mobile device, it is recommended to find out which smartphones are equipped with the NFC function. The mobile phone must have an OS of at least Android 4.4. or iOS 8.

Brands that support contactless payment options include:

  • Samsung;
  • iPhone;
  • HTC;
  • Honor;
  • Huawei Nova;
  • Wileyfox Swift;
  • Nokia;
  • Xiaomi;
  • LG.

To use a smartphone to pay for goods, you need to set up a mobile device and install additional software on it.

Sberbank was one of the first to use this technology in Russia.

Following him, his other colleagues in the workshop began to join. To date, the list is as follows:

  • Alfa Bank;
  • Rocketbank;
  • VTB24;
  • Tinkoff;
  • Opening;
  • Dot;
  • MTS-Bank;
  • Binbank;
  • Russian Standard;
  • Raiffeisenbank;
  • Rosselkhozbank;
  • Ak Bars;
  • Promsvyazbank.

What to do if there is no NFC – NFC antennas and modules for the phone

How to use NFC on your phone to pay, which banks support the technology and what programs will be needed for contactless payment for purchases?

The TSM platform remotely controls the Secure Element chips in users’ phones through a secure communication channel, using the phone itself as a modem. The keys from the Secure Element are stored on special HSM (Hardware Security Module) servers, which are an integral part of the TSM, and without the participation of the latter it is impossible to gain access to the chip.

Based on the order of the service provider, TSM records (or deletes, for example, in case of loss of a smartphone) card data in Secure Element, and also allows you to remotely audit issued cards or, for example, view the current balance of fare cards or loyalty cards to display on the phone screen.

For which issued card the user chooses to activate the payment mode, through the user application “Wallet”, which displays issued and available cards for issuance, and also accepts applications for issuing new ones. The service provider, upon receiving a card issuance request, transmits this data to the phone’s Secure Element via the TSM platform.

Probably, you have already noticed that at the end of 2017, the AndroidPay program began to be actively promoted on the network. With it, you can make contactless payments using your smartphone. It’s cool? Certainly yes. But for some reason, during AndroidPay ads, no one mentions that your smartphone must have an NFC module installed for the system to work.

Huawei Nova is a compact and still relevant smartphone that Huawei released at the end of 2016. Despite the fact that Huawei has already managed to release several updates to this series, it is the first Huawei Nova that is an icon. What’s the secret? The answer is simple: the presence of NFC, an energy-efficient mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor with a frequency of 2 GHz, a high-quality Full HD IPS display, 3 GB of RAM in the company with 32 GB of internal memory.

I am glad that Huawei Nova has a new generation USB Type-C connector. It is also impossible not to mention a very good smartphone camera. Pictures on the main camera can be safely called an example for other smartphones in this price category. If you are looking for a compact, affordable, good-looking smartphone, you can safely look towards Huawei Nova and not worry about it being outdated.

The smartphone has a number of advantages. First, the Wileyfox Swift 2X is a smartphone with a premium feel. It will come to you in a black and orange designer box, inside there will be a variety of accessories.

Фото 4

Secondly, Wileyfox Swift 2X looks original and interesting. Yes, its appearance cannot be called attractive, but the smartphone clearly stands out from other devices. The fact is that in January/February 2018, a new generation of Samsung Galaxy A will be introduced, which will lead to a drop in prices for Samsung Galaxy A (2017). Yes, a frameless design and new processors are expected in the updated series, but it will also cost much more.

Фото 5

And the Samsung Galaxy A series (2017) is a very successful creation of Samsung, especially the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017). This smartphone is a unicorn in the world of smartphones. Try now to find a phone with a diagonal of less than 5 inches – this is not an easy task. Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) has a display diagonal of 4.

7 inch, dressed in a glass body and equipped with an amazing 12 MP camera. It is also worth noting that the smartphone is protected from dust and moisture according to the IP68 standard. There is support not only for the Android Pay mobile payment system, but also for Samsung Pay. The weak point of the smartphone is the amount of internal memory. 16 GB is not serious.

Xiaomi Mi5S specifications:

  • Materials: metal glass;
  • Display: 5.15″, IPS matrix, 1080×1920;
  • Processor: Snapdragon 821, quad-core, the cores of which operate at a frequency of up to 2.15 GHz;

How to set up and pay by phone

Фото 6

After receiving a bank card with contactless payment function, set up your phone. If Android OS is installed on the smartphone, you need to:

  1. Go to settings.
  2. Select the “Wireless networks” section.
  3. Scroll down to “More” and then go to it.
  4. Allow data transfer in the “NFC” section.
  5. Enable automatic activation next to the “Android Beam” line.

For iOS mobile devices, no setting is required. It remains only to install the application through which the card is added.

To pay by mobile phone it is recommended:

  1. Purchase goods in a store, pharmacy or other outlet.
  2. Wait until the cashier passes the products through the cash register.
  3. Bring the smartphone to the terminal.
  4. Enter the pin code on the device.

Money will be withdrawn from the account in 1-2 seconds. When applying to the terminal, make sure that it supports NFC technology. To do this, ask the cashier, or look at the icons pasted on the bank machine.

Phone payment function

As mentioned earlier, NFC technology is now used on many devices. The chip is already installed in the smartphone by the manufacturer. If it is not there, it is possible to purchase a special tool in an electronics store – an NFC antenna.

In addition, at the moment, many mobile operators make SIM cards with contactless payment support. Data about the connected card and the payments made are not stored in the smartphone’s memory, but in the chip itself.

In order to use a mobile phone as a carrier of payment cards, it is necessary to install a similar microprocessor into it, where payment applications can be written. Such a microprocessor in the phone is called the Secure Element, and the NFC module acts as a controller.

image1-7

The Secure Element can either be built into the phone’s motherboard or be located on a detachable module: SIM card or SD card.

If the phone has the same microprocessor as plastic cards, then the same payment applications can be stored in the phone and contactless payments can be made by bringing the phone to the reader.

Cellular operators were the first in the Russian Federation to try to transfer the card to the phone, for example, MTS and Russian Standard Bank, Megafon and a transport card in Yekaterinburg, Beeline and a transport card in Kazan, etc. .P. To do this, they needed to purchase special SIM cards with a Secure Element, arrange with a transport company or bank to enroll a payment application on these cards, carry out the “contact personalization” process, and then exchange subscribers’ old SIM cards for new ones.

Consumers had to visit carrier service centers to change their SIM cards, and ended up with only one specific card in their phone, after which the whole operation would have to be repeated after the expiration date. However, if customers need several different cards and in different regions, then the SIM card will have to travel a long time before falling into the hands of users.

To use the phone as a debit card, you need to install a specialized application:

  • Apple Pay;
  • Android Pay;
  • Samsung Pay.

There are also third-party programs that allow you to pay for any products offline from your phone.

System for Apple

Apple Pay is a system for making payments through a linked card. The application was developed by Apple Corporation.

The software is compatible with Sberbank, VTB and Tinkoff. To install the software on a mobile device, you must have:

  • iPhone 6 or newer;
  • debit or credit card with NFC;
  • account.

To link a bank card, use the built-in Wallet program. After app launch:

  • click on the inscription: “Adding a card”;
  • enter the number, full name, year and month of expiration of the card;
  • at the next step, the compatibility of the card is automatically checked;
  • if the identification is passed, click on the “Next” button.

When the linking is completed, you can pay for any purchases using your phone.

Which Chinese phone with NFC to buy?

Inexpensive phones with NFC support can be bought literally for a penny. Chinese phones with near-field communication can be ordered directly from China, thereby saving quite a lot. Popular now Xiaomi brand produces models in different budgets, ranging from cheap to expensive. Which xiaomi has NFC support? In fact, there are quite a few of them, pay attention to the line: Mi4, Mi5, Mi6 and others – they all have this function.

The cheapest rugged phone with NFC is AGM A8, waterproof and runs on android 7 and quad core MSM8916 – you can buy it in the range of $150-200.

How do you know if your phone has NFC?

Your smartphone may have this useful technology. To find out if your phone has NFC, you can remove the battery cover – there should be a corresponding mark on its sticker. If you don’t see Near field Communication on the battery, what should you do? How do I know if my phone supports NFC?

Go to the following path in your phone: settings – wireless (connections). There should be an NFC item in this menu – you need to enable it, Android Beam should also be automatically activated. Otherwise, you simply do not have this communication function, but this problem can be solved. Now you know how to check if your phone has NFC, let’s see how to install it in android.

What is NFC – technology video

shutterstock_137393987

In fact, the principle of operation of this technology is quite simple – the user links his bank card to an NFC-enabled device and can then pay via phone.

This saves a lot of time and also eliminates the need to always carry a card with you. One of the most important characteristics of NFC can be called its high speed of operation – 0.1 seconds, and no additional actions are required for activation. It is enough just to bring your smartphone to the payment terminal and the contact between the two gadgets will be established automatically.

There are two types of NFC chip operation:

  1. Active. File sharing mode between two devices.
  2. Passive. The mode of receiving or transmitting files without feedback (most often this mode is used as a travel or pass).

What to do if there is no NFC – NFC antennas and modules for the phone

This NFC SIM card can be installed to make payments with your phone.

Another way to install an NFC module in your phone is to equip it with a full-fledged NFC antenna. It is glued to the SIM card, and the other half is placed under the cover of the smartphone. This conversion adds a lot of possibilities for working with this technology.

Now you know what to do if there is no NFC!

NFC in the phone what is it, how to use it, how to turn it on?

NFC (Near field communication) is a wireless communication interface that allows you to transfer data over a short distance (up to 15 cm). Of the features of the NFC module: compactness, energy efficiency, budget. It is also impossible not to note the fact that the connection occurs in less than 0.1 seconds. But NFC also has disadvantages. For example, data is transferred slowly.

The most popular scenario for using the NFC module is contactless payments. Don’t worry, no one can steal your money for several reasons. Firstly, the operation takes a matter of seconds, secondly, the radius of the module is too small, and thirdly, each transaction has its own unique code, which is very difficult to read.

  • Bank card marked paypass
  • Application of the respective bank
  • Find the NFC item in the application menu
  • Put the card on the back cover of the phone for reading
  • Remember password for payment transactions
  • Everything is banally simple and clear.

To sum up, NFC is a very convenient, understandable and quite secure technology that can make your life easier. Therefore, when choosing a smartphone in 2018, be sure to pay attention to the presence of an NFC module in it.

In the settings and menu of the phone there is a group of parameters “Wireless networks”, click “More” – the list of parameters will open. The NFC item can be turned off, you need to switch the toggle switch on the screen to the “On” position. The NFC setup on your phone is now complete.

Conclusion

Modern technologies not only simplify but also speed up our life and make it more comfortable. This technology will not only save time, but also do it very safely.

The security of the connection is guaranteed by the near-field communication, because you almost touch the tags when transmitting data. Applications that use NFC technology allow you to use the gadget not only for payment, but also to change phone modes when you read the tag. You can place tags in your car, home, bedroom, and set up which parameters will match which tag – this greatly automates your device.

Budget phones with NFC

Price: 11,670 rubles

Opens the rating of cheap phones with NFC – Samsung Galaxy J4 (2018). This is one of the few successful models of the company in 2018. If we talk about its merits, then I immediately want to mention a screen with a diagonal of 6 inches and a resolution of 1480 by 720 pixels. Despite the fact that the matrix was made using IPS technology, and not AMOLED, it gives the user a detailed picture with a high level of contrast and rich colors.

applepay-800x395

The features of the smartphone include face unlock. This technology is gradually replacing the fingerprint scanner, and the fact that it can be found in a solution for such a price cannot but rejoice. It works clearly, although in a dark room the face of the owner of the front camera may not be recognized.

Sony Xperia L2

Price: 12,350 rubles

One step away from winning the top of inexpensive phones with an NFC chip, the Sony Xperia L2 model stopped. In addition to the corporate angular design, thanks to which Sony smartphones are known, it offers its user a 5.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. Despite such a low resolution for 2018, the image on the display is quite juicy and bright, and the colors are saturated. In terms of compactness, the gadget significantly outperforms most modern “shovels”. Dimensions Sony Xperia L2 – 78x150x9.8 mm

The MediaTek MT6737T entry-level processor and 3 GB of RAM can handle all daily tasks, but it has no headroom for the future. The main disadvantage of the model is its autonomy. This is a little strange, since a 3300 mAh battery should be enough to support simple hardware and a low-resolution screen without any problems.

Huawei P Smart 32GB

Price: 12,530 rubles

Huawei P Smart is the best budget phone with NFC. The gadget was equipped with a bright 5.65-inch display with a resolution of 2160 by 1080 pixels. Due to the fact that it has a natural color reproduction, the picture pleases with its quality in any work scenarios, from everyday use to watching videos and playing games.

Huawei P Smart is also strong with its speaker. Even at maximum volume, when playing music, you will be pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. By connecting a high-quality headset to your smartphone, even spoiled audiophiles will be satisfied. There were some drawbacks, but for their price they are not so critical – the lack of Wi-Fi 5 GHz and a slippery case.

To understand how to fully set up nfc for card payment, you should install one of the payment applications – Android Pay, Samsung Pay, Apple Pay – depending on the smartphone model and preferences.

Next, if your bank card is compatible with the contactless payment system, you need to add it to the application. The card must have a paypass option and must be issued by a bank that uses NSF. Next:

  1. Pass identification (go to the application, enter data).
  2. Press the button “Add new card”.
  3. We enter the card data that the application will request. In some cases, it is necessary to take a picture of the card.
  4. Select the confirmation method (for example, fingerprint).
  5. Finishing the process.

Any of the applications gives its users the ability to add multiple cards. These cards can be issued by different banks. By default, the main card for payment is the one whose data was entered first. However, this can be adjusted in the settings of the installed application.

NFC technology is simple and convenient to use. Over the entire period of its existence, it has been duly appreciated by both the owners of modern smartphones and various commercial establishments. Contactless payment is rapidly being implemented in a variety of areas, as it allows you to build more positive and productive communication between companies and their customers.

A payment card (or smart card) is a microprocessor placed in a metal case, which in turn is installed in a plastic rectangle of a certain size. The microprocessor has its own operating system, where the payment application of a particular service provider is recorded, which is then “combined” with the payment data of a particular client.

The data on the card is encrypted and closed with special keys, so it is impossible to change it later. In addition, it is possible to distinguish between the state of the card before and after personalization, which means that the possibility of falsifying any data after the card is issued is completely excluded.

By contacting the reader, the card receives the power necessary for operation, launches the operating system and the application installed in it, which, in turn, “communicates” with the reader. Contactless cards work in exactly the same way, only they receive power from the electromagnetic field of the reader at the checkout or turnstile.

For a plastic card, a certain standardized form was important so that the card could be read in any terminal, but with the transition to contactless cards, the form ceased to matter, which makes it possible to use the card as a “carrier” (a microprocessor with a payment application) practically any object, be it a bracelet, watch, key chain, plastic card or phone.

Fortunately, the phone is an interactive device that is always connected. Consequently, it is possible to remotely record payment cards and exactly those service providers that specific users need. To implement this function, the role of TSM (Trusted Service Manager) was formulated, which combines service providers (Service Provider TSM) on the one hand, and Secure Element chips in any form factors (Secure Element Issuer TSM) on the other hand. This TSM platform was developed by us at i-Free and certified for compliance with all necessary international standards.

TSM allows Secure Element holders not to integrate with every service provider and not to bring “card carriers” to all of them for contact personalization, and service providers not to connect to all operators and phone manufacturers. Cellular operators, handset manufacturers and service providers simply connect to TSM using a standard protocol and integrate with multiple partners at the same time.

Payment cards are not transferred to the phone, are not linked or duplicated, but are issued. To issue a card, the service provider must connect to the TSM and the TSM must have access to the Secure Element. Therefore, today it is still impossible to issue any card to any phone, but the movement is going in this direction.

Interest is observed among all participants in the process: phone manufacturers who need new interesting functionality, and cellular operators, and service providers who need a new audience, and, most importantly, users who are tired of the heaviness of plastic cards in their wallets. Issuing cards to your phone will soon become as commonplace as taking photos or browsing the Internet.
