Everything about Android Pay: what it is and how the service works

Android Pay is a mobile payment system from Google. It allows you to make purchases using mobile devices: smartphones, tablet PCs, as well as smart watches

Android Pay is a service for making contactless payments using smartphones, tablets and SMART watches that run the Android operating system (Android 4.4 KitKat and later) and support NFC (Near Field Communication). This short-range communication technology provides contactless data transfer from device to device. Basically, Android Pay is a mobile NFC wallet.

Now you don’t need to carry a pile of bank cards with you: you can “settle” them all in your smartphone with the Android Pay application installed. It works on Android devices running KitKat 4.4 and later, which, and this is important, have NFC technology support. Usually, the icon for quick access to the wireless module can be found in the notification shade

If you don’t know if your smartphone supports NFC, check the specifications of the model on the manufacturer’s website or find it in the list on the NFC World website. You can do it easier – check the technology support in the Android settings in the “Wireless networks” tab by clicking the “More” button. If the gadget has a chip, the NFC item and the activation button will be displayed on the settings page that opens.

If your smartphone does not support NFC, you will not be able to use Android Pay.

Also, the service is not available to users of jailbroken devices. Devices with an unlocked bootloader and the presence of root rights are not friendly with Android Pay. And this is a guarantee of the security of financial transactions, for which Google is responsible. In other words, the corporation is not ready to be responsible for third-party software, which it is not able to control.

Android Pay will not want to work on smartphones with “homemade” operating systems like CyanogenMod, as well as on some Chinese nonames. But people who purchased the gadget from an authorized store have nothing to worry about.

Where can I pay for purchases using Android Pay

The procedure for paying for purchases through this service is not complicated. It is important to first add the card to the application in order to use it. Additionally, do not forget to enable the NFC chip in the smartphone settings, the program will not work without it.

Payment is made according to the following algorithm:

  • At the checkout, ask an employee to provide a non-cash payment method.
  • Activate the lock screen of your smartphone, swipe up and select the card.
  • Place your finger on the scanner to confirm.
  • Bring the device to the terminal.
  • If the amount exceeds 1000 rubles, you will need to enter a code. Limits may vary, some banks allow customers to set them themselves.
  • Payment will be successful.

To use this payment method, the terminal must support contactless payment. Some older hardware models may not work correctly with these services.

There are many such terminals today. Their number is growing.

PrivatBank, for example, which owns a large network of POS-terminals, out of 142,000 86 are contactless.

Today you can pay using your smartphone with Android Pay in a variety of stores and services. As a rule, special icons are displayed on the terminal, indicating support for contactless payment. When you see one of them, feel free to put your device on and take your paid purchases

They can be seen at many points of sale in Ukraine, in large shopping centers, supermarkets, restaurants and cafes, small shops in residential areas, at gas stations and in public transport.

In Ukraine today you can pay contactless in trade and service networks: supermarkets, pharmacies, cafes and restaurants, as well as in public transport

Advantages and disadvantages

We looked at how to use Samsung Pay step by step. We list the advantages and disadvantages of the system. Users highlighted the following advantages:

  1. Support for both bank and club cards.
  2. Ease of use.
  3. You can no longer take plastic cards with you.
  4. Samsung Pay replaces cash.
  5. You can make money transfers through it.
  6. Online payment is supported.
  7. The functionality of the service is only expanding.

Disadvantages are difficult to name. Judging by the reviews, some users highlighted the lack of support for certain banks. Additionally, the service does not work in some states.

Is it safe

Yes, quite. Although the concerns are understandable: the application has full access to the linked bank cards and can pay for goods and services, you just need to bring the gadget to the terminal. And perhaps, from the outside, the system really does not look very reliable for many. And if you take into account the fact that you don’t even need to go into the application to pay, it’s especially so.

But the fact is that Android Pay does not transfer card data and information about its owner to the terminal. Payment keys are generated by the Google server, they are not stored in the gadget’s memory. The security of payments with Mastercard via Android Pay is guaranteed by the Mastercard Digital Enablement Service tokenization platform.

In addition, the range of the NFC chip is a couple of centimeters. You need to literally lean the smartphone with the back panel, where NFC is usually installed, against the POS terminal, wait a bit until they exchange data.

Traditional PIN code, pattern, fingerprint access – unlock protection is also important.

This is necessary so that in case of loss or theft of a smartphone, the finder or an attacker could not pay for purchases. Of course, the PIN-code and pattern can be picked up, but this takes time. And the owner will have time to block the device.

A logical question arises: what to do in case of loss of a smartphone into which you entered your bank card details? Everything is simple. You don’t even have to block them at the bank. Use Google’s Find My Device feature to remotely lock your smartphone, change your password, or delete all personal data

An important nuance. Google for all Android smartphones by default offers a convenient way to block from any device. You log into your account and block the gadget. Immediately, at the first connection to the network, the smartphone will automatically “lock”, all user data will be erased.

Samsung Pay in Ukraine

Samsung Pay only works with specific banks, not necessarily all in the country. Although the list of partners will be announced to us during the official announcement, the vacancy indicates that Samsung wants a specialist with experience in PrivatBank, Avala, Ukrsibbank, OTP Bank, Alfa Bank or Unicredit Bank.

When exactly the launch will take place in Ukraine is still unknown.

Today, the popularity of Android Pay rests primarily on the lack of POS terminals. And this significantly hinders the development of the service. According to the National Bank of Ukraine, in 2015 there were only 4.5 thousand such terminals for every million people. For comparison, in the United States, these figures reach 43.6 thousand.

But at the same time, statistics and the latest NBU report show that here, in Ukraine, the number of contactless transactions has grown to 38.6%. Experts are sure that Android Pay is destined to gain wide popularity.

As a reminder, there are no hidden fees for using Android Pay. Expenses are exactly the same as when paying with a plastic bank card.

In addition, the development of the service in Ukraine is held back by the fact that not all smartphones of users have an NFC chip.

According to the German research company GfK, which is considered a reliable source of up-to-date information about markets and consumers in more than 100 countries, in Ukraine, the share of Android smartphones that support NFC technology, for which POS-terminals are “sharpened”, last year was only 15.7%. This is about three million devices. Perhaps the summary for 2017 is more reassuring.

So, what do we have. And the fact that Android Pay is the first of the three largest payment services, and we also know Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, has finally worked in Ukraine. It is curious when we will launch its competitors. Well, who will push whom.

What do you think, will services like Android Pay become popular in Ukraine? And are you personally ready to use them? Have your say in the comments.
